Go to war with your subconscious
In order to progress in life, to move to the next level of success, you must go to war with your own subconscious mind.
You must move out of your comfort zone.
Why your mind wants you to stay
Your subconscious mind works very hard to keep you psychologically comfortable. But in so doing, it will keep you in your present situation. You will be unable to move ahead.
It wants you to stay where you belong – in your comfort zone.
No matter how bad your current situation, you are familiar with it. You know what is expected of you, you know how to act, you know what is coming next. Your situation is the bear that you know. There is little work to staying in your present situation.
The second you leave your comfort zone, your subconscious mind goes into action to get you to go back to where you belong. It will try every trick that it can to get you back to your comfort zone.
Trick 1 – physical
Those butterflies in your stomach are actually excess acid – a warning to get you to go back to your comfort zone. You will sweat, maybe your knees will shake, your voice will quiver, your hands will shake, your heart will beat faster.
It is not a coincidence that these are the same symptoms that are measured on lie detector tests. According to your subconscious, you are lying. You don’t belong here and if you want to get back to normal, you must go back to where you belong.
Trick 2 – blocking
We talked about this in the Removing Mental Blindness post. Your subconscious mind will block your awareness of certain things. You may not be able to find your keys on the first day of a new job, or you will get lost on the way to your first date with Mr. or Ms. Right.
Trick 3 – sabotage
You will subconsciously say and do things that will sabotage your own success. If you are in a great relationship, you may see “evidence” of cheating even if the other person is not cheating. You will find fault where there is none.
According to your subconscious mind, this new relationship is too good for you; therefore you must find a reason to go back to the bear you know – the familiar.
Trick 4 – finding fault
Once you move on to the new situation, your subconscious mind will find fault with it. I actually knew a couple of men who moved from the inner city to the suburbs and complained because there was no graffiti!
Your subconscious mind finds fault with the new situation in order to convince you that you need to return to your comfort zone.
Trick 5 – procrastination
You will wait until the last minute to prepare for that meeting that will get you a promotion. You will be late for that hot date.
Procrastination is a manifestation of FEAR.
Conquering the tricks
In order to succeed, you must leave your comfort zone. You cannot stay where you are and still move ahead.
Be aware of the tricks and move ahead in spite of them.
Visualization is the most effective tool to control your subconscious mind. Imagine yourself already at the next level. Make the images vivid, full of sensory information and extreme emotion.
Take advantage of the fact that the subconscious cannot tell the difference between what is real and what is imagined.
Find fault with your current situation – become dissatisfied with it. Raise the setting on your mental thermostat.
If you do this effectively, the next level will easily become your new comfort zone and you wouldn’t dream of going back.
