Life's Most Important Question, What are You Doing for Others?

Martin Luther King, Jr.

If you are suffering financial hardship, the way to recover is to give to others.

Even if you are not having hard times, it is equally important to give in order to keep the universal laws in motion. Remember that universal laws apply to everyone.

It’s hard to think about giving to others when your own financial situation is in turmoil. But in giving, you set some powerful universal laws in motion.

Law of focus

Giving to others instantly shifts your focus away from your own troubles. In giving, you focus on helping others rather than your own helplessness.

The law of focus says that you move in the direction that you look, therefore giving moves you away from your own helplessness and toward your helpfulness.

When we are suffering financially, we habitually focus on what we lost, not what we can possibly gain. We focus on what we do not want, rather than what we do want and therefore, we get more of the same.

Shifting your focus will change your future.

Law of cognitive dissonance

We cannot hold on to two opposite beliefs at the same time. When we focus on the positive, we lock out the negative. Likewise, when we focus on the negative, we lock out the positive.

When we help others, we focus on the positive and therefore lock out the negative, debilitating mindset that will keep us down.

We begin to reinforce our sense of self-worth, regain our self-confidence and lock out those feelings of self-doubt that make it hard to keep trying. We begin to see that we are more than our material possessions and that we do have something of value to offer the world.

Law of awareness

Remember that you have mental blind spots that will block awareness of things that are not important to you. If your focus is on the negative, you will not see positive things around you – opportunities that will help you to recover from whatever hardship you are suffering.

When you turn toward helping others, those blind spots are lifted. You will begin to see what you DO have rather than what you DO NOT have. You will begin to notice opportunities around you that will get you to where you want to be.

You will stop defining yourself in negative, unhealthy ways and redefine yourself as the competent person that you are.

Law of attraction

It is important to give because in giving you are planting seeds for your future harvest. No seeds, no harvest – that’s the law of attraction. You will not be able to recover financially unless you begin to give.

Seeds take time to grow, but when properly tended, watered and weeded, grow they will. As you give, you are planting seeds for your better future.

How can you give when you have nothing?

All of this positive thinking and universal laws stuff is really cute, until you look at reality. If you are living hand to mouth, it is really hard to give to others, right?

The assumption that you make is that the only thing that is worth giving is money or material possessions. Everyone has something to give and your most valuable gifts have no price tag.
