Habari gani – nia: What’s the news? Purpose.
Start by lighting the black candle umoja (unity) and use it to light the three red candles, the candles that represent struggle: kujichagulia, ujimaa, ujamaa (self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics) then light the first green candle of hope and growth, the candle of nia (purpose.)
Shout harambee (let’s pull together) each time a candle is lit. Exchange zwadi (gifts). Then have the oldest guest give a toast before sharing a sip from the kikombe cha umoja (cup of unity.)
It is now time to reflect on the principle of the day.
The principle of nia – purpose
We all have a purpose in life. Finding it takes patience and developing it takes work. But living our lives to fulfill our purpose makes us better individuals and builds stronger communities.
Poverty is not your purpose. Ignorance is not your purpose. Despair is not your purpose.
With no purpose you have no direction, no real future. You have no control over your life and no joy.
If you have no purpose for your life, create one. Find a passion and pursue it with all your heart.
Make TODAY the day you find one. Make TODAY the first day that you live, and the last day that you merely exist.
Needs are all around, so are your abilities. Purpose is merely opening your eyes and seeing.
Start looking around you. What can you do to make your world a better place? What talents have you been given? How can they bless others?
To have purpose is to have hope, a reason to wake up each morning, a positive outlook, a great attitude, a direction in which to lean.
The question is not IF you have a purpose, we all do. The question becomes – what is your purpose and what are you doing to fulfill it?
My nia resolutions
- I will continue to strengthen my community through education and enlightenment.
- I will continue to show others how to fulfill their own purpose in life and to seize the opportunities that are presented to them.
- I will continue to strengthen my effectiveness by growing a little each day and taking advantage of the opportunities around me.
Harambee, harambee, harambee, harambee, harambee
